July

Saturday, July 11, 10 a.m. – Indian Study Group: Professional genealogist Shirley Donaldson will conduct a workshop on Indians and the Buffalo Soldiers.

Monday, July 13–Friday, July 17, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Primarily Teaching: A weeklong workshop designed to provide access to the rich resources of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for educators at the upper elementary, secondary, and college levels. Each participant will research the holdings of the National Archives at Kansas City for documents suitable for classroom use and develop strategies for using these documents in the classroom or design professional development activities to help classroom teachers use primary source documents effectively. The cost of the institute, including all materials, is $100. Space is limited; interested persons are encouraged to call 816-268-8017.

Tuesday, July 14, 6 p.m. – History author, Robert Collins, will discuss and sign his book “Jim Lane: scoundrel, statesman, Kansan.” Copies of Collins’s book will be available for purchase from The Kansas City Store at the National Archives.

Wednesday, July 15, 6 p.m.– Genealogy Workshop Series: National Archives staff will present information on basic preservation and how to care for important family papers. Learn how to keep your valuable documents and photos safe for the next generation. Staff will discuss handling techniques, preservation techniques, environmental considerations, conservation services, the special preservation challenges posed by electronic media and locating inexpensive supplies.

Saturday, July 18 – 75th Anniversary Celebration – Join the National Archives in celebrating its' 75th Anniversary on Saturday July 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., a special 75th Anniversary cake will be served at 11:30 a.m. Kids of all ages will enjoy taking a scavenger hunt through the "It's Big" exhibit; pinning the bowtie on the President; making an autography album; and playing games inspired by the Archives. Ararat Shriners Clown Troop 542 will be on-hand to create custom balloon animals and to "clown-around".

Events throughout the day are free and open to the public.

  • 11:00 a.m. – KCTV-5 meteorologist Kate Horner will be signing her children's book Brainstorming.

  • Noon – Local filmmaker and attorney, Terence O'Malley will show clips and answer questions about his latest documentary, Blackhand Strawman. O'Malley is the author of Nelly Don: A Stitch in Time.

  • 2:00 p.m. – Kansas City Star reporter and author, Brian Burnes will be signing his books including Walt Disney's Missouri; Great Plains Originals; Harry S. Truman: His Life and Times and The Ike Files.

Genealogy and Family History Workshops:

  • 10:00 a.m.Introduction to the Archival Research Catalog, archives staff will explain how to use the Archival Research Catalog for genealogy and historical research. More...

  • 1:30 p.m.A History of the National Archives, staff will present a history of the National Archives from its official beginning in 1934 with one location to the expansion of the agency that includes 13 regional offices and 13 Presidential libraries, 18 Federal Records Centers, and the Federal Register.

  • 3:00 p.m.Preservation 101, will offer basic preservation introduction and techniques for two dimensional items. Valuations will not be given and repair will not be performed by staff.

Saturday, July 18, 10–11 a.m. Genealogy Workshop Series: National Archives staff presents an introduction to using the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) as a tool for genealogy research. Not sure how to research using ARC? The presentation will cover searching hints and tips as well as give a better understanding of how the holdings at the National Archives are cataloged, described and made available for public use.

Friday, July 24, 10 a.m. – Indian Study Group: Professional genealogist Shirley Donaldson will conduct a workshop on Indians in the Military

Friday, July 24, Noon – Brown Bag Lunch Series: Join archives staff as we present our Let’s Get Reacquainted! recorded lecture series on various genealogy topics. This month we will feature Freedman’s Bureau Records and African-American Genealogy Research. Archives staff will be available for questions.

Saturday, August 1, 10 a.m. – Indian Study Group: Professional genealogist Shirley Donaldson will conduct a workshop on Early Indian Records

Thursday, August 6, 6 p.m. – From the Big House to the Big Leagues: The Unlikely Journey of Four Leavenworth Prisoners to the Negro Leagues presented by Tim Rives, Supervisory Archives at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library. Rives will detail the experiences of former Leavenworth inmates who eventually went on to play Negro Leagues baseball.

Saturday, August 15, 10–11 a.m. – Genealogy Workshop Series: National Archives staff will present an introduction to researching the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary records. Innocent or guilty? Over 68,000 incarcerated inmates have served time at Leavenworth, these are their stories.

Wednesday, August 19, 6–7 p.m. – Genealogy Workshop Series: National Archives staff will present an overall introduction to genealogy research and records housed at the archives. The workshop covers census, military, naturalization, and immigration records and recommended for beginning researchers.

Thursday, August 20, 6 p.m. – Author and Wichita State University professor, Craig Miner, will discuss and sign copies of his book “Seeding Civil War: Kansas in the national news, 1854-1858.” Copies of Miner’s book will be available for purchase from The Kansas City Store at the National Archives.

Saturday, August 22, 1–2 p.m. – From the Curator: Join our curatorial staff on a special guided tour through our exhibits and answer questions. This month will feature a behind the scenes look at The Kansas Nebraska Act exhibit.

Friday, August 28, 10 a.m. – Indian Study Group: Professional genealogist Shirley Donaldson will conduct a workshop on the Trail of Tears.

Friday, August 28, Noon – Brown Bag Lunch Series: Join archives staff as we present our Let’s Get Reacquainted! recorded lecture series on various genealogy topics. This month we will feature Headstone Applications. Archives staff will be available for questions.

Tuesday, September 29, 2:30 p.m. – Know Your Records Lecture: the National Archives at Kansas City and the National Archives in Washington DC, will broadcast via interactive distance learning Researching via Footnote.com. Laura Prescott from Footnote.com will discuss the files recently scanned and published online through the partnership between the National Archives, Family Search, and Footnote.com.
